I expect Nachiketa to be here any moment, on his way to meet Yama. It seems to me the entire Universe is holding its breath for the instant when the boy comes face to face with the one feared by all, and I am happy to play a small part in the road to that meeting.

I find that some people are unaware of my role and responsibilities, and this is probably a good time to get that out the way. My name is Vagdevi, and my primary role is to manage and administer speech, knowledge, music and arts. I create a path for people to learn, and opportunities to gain wisdom. Whether they choose to walk the path is up to them and their karma. Bet you knew that already. I am also known by several other names like Saraswati, Bharati and Vani. I would love to tell you why I am usually seen with the loveliest of musical instruments — the veena — in most pictures, but that would be a big digression to the main story. Some other time I suppose.

I finally saw Nachiketa making his way, and stepped forward to greet him. I sensed that he probably did not recognize me, so I introduced myself. With folded hands and bowed head, Nachiketa said “I am on this journey brought about by the strangest of circumstances. When I see Yama, what should I do? Will he speak with me? Pray, advise so I can proceed confidently.”

“Nachiketa, the only obstacles to your samvada (dialog) with Yama will be in your own mind, not outside. Think deeply, speak honestly, and listen carefully is all I can tell you.” I told him more than this, but I will let you discover that as you take in the future parts of this story.

As he walked away, I saw the shine in the boy’s eyes turn into a sparkle, and I knew he was ready.
